BIO

Tracie Williams is an independent documentary photographer, creative producer and filmmaker with extensive field experience covering post-conflict humanitarian efforts in Southeast Asia and social movements in the United States. As a creative producer, Williams has collaborated on numerous site-specific multimedia, interactive and immersive projects for PHOTOVILLE, the largest annual photographic event in NYC, with industry legends such as Jamel Shabazz, Pete Brook, and Marvin Heiferman.

Have No Fear, a recent filmmaking project created during her time as a Fellow with the UnionDocs Collaborative Studio, has received national and international accolades. The film highlights the work of Ase Dance Theater Collective, a Brooklyn-based neo-folkloric performance ensemble who specialize in dance theater from the African Diaspora, as they prepare a performance as a form of both healing and resistance in response to the senseless murders perpetrated by police of unarmed black and brown women, men and children—empowering their community and passing lessons of strength to their youth.

In March 2017, Williams returned from a month-long, self-funded embed in Standing Rock where she was living and documenting the main resistance camp of the Dakota Access Pipeline protests, just north of Cannon Ball, North Dakota. Williams was arrested while covering the militarized raid that took place there, moments after the image of the two Water Protectors praying near the Sacred Fire—with weapons aimed at their heads, point-blank range—was made. After almost 17 months, Williams’ charges were finally dismissed in July 2018.

Tracie Williams is an alumni of the Eddie Adams Workshop, holds an MFA in Advanced Photographic Studies from the International Center of Photography-Bard and is a regular contributor to The Nation Magazine.
